Patrick Mangan

Patrick Mangan is from Brooklyn, New York. A two-time All-Ireland fiddle champion, he is a student of renowned New York fiddler and teacher Brian Conway.
***

"This debut recording by Patrick Mangan is testament to the resilience of the tradition in an urban landscape far removed from its original roots in rural Ireland. The legendary Sligo fiddler Michael Coleman made a huge impact on both sides of the Atlantic but it was in New York that he directly initiated a lineage of fiddle playing that has to date been carried through three generations of fiddlers. Andy McGann learned directly from Michael Coleman. He passed it on to Brian Conway, who in turn taught Patrick Mangan. Through the impact of Coleman, McGann, Conway and a host of other musicians and teachers such as Martin Mulvihill, we have the nucleus of an authentic regional style of traditional Irish music that could be described as East Coast/New York. To my ear, this is the style that underlies Patrick's playing and which is demonstrated on this recording with unquestionable technical mastery."

Andy McGann
Finally, I have created this long overdue page! Through the kindness of Andy McGann, and the help of Brian Conway, I am able to post some unreleased tracks from a performance with Felix Dolan on Piano. There are so many great moments that it was difficult to choose.
Check out the new Andy McGann page and hear, a few moments from June 12, 1992!
Téada

New recording Spring 2004: Give Us a Penny and Let Us Be Gone
Details as they become available. Yes, their look has changed!

Winners of Irish Music Magazine's "Best Traditional Newcomers of 2003," Téada has added a 5th member, re-released their CD with Green Linnet in the USA, and is touring all over the place. I saw them in September 2003 and was amazed at their energy, skill, and faithfulness to the tradition. They introduced the audience to many different types of music such as the Set Dance, Barndance, Slow airs, songs in Irish, and more. Selections like that were usually followed up by a very brisk set of jigs or reels. They are very entertaining and, along with growing up in the tradition, these young man have an assortment of degrees in Music, Irish (and Old Irish!), and Electronic Commerce. These are 21st century men staying true to a very old culture. See them if you can.

Dervish
News: Music of Dervish to be featured in an upcoming film.

The music of Dervish is set to be featured in an upcoming movie to be filmed in Ireland and New York. The characters and story line sound much like real life.

Also: At the first meeting of 2004 of the Sligo Borough Council, it was decided to give the seven members of Dervish "The Freedom of the City of Sligo". This is the highest civic honour that a local Council can give. This honour was bestowed on Dervish for being one of the most successful Irish traditional music groups of our time and also for bringing their local Sligo style of music to a worldwide audience. This honor has been only given to a small number of people throughout the years in the local region.
The date for the official ceremony will be announced in the coming weeks.

Phillip Duffy

The Sligo fiddler who was the youngest musician to contribute to the famous book:

This CD contains both well-known tunes and original tunes from Phillip.

Mick O'Brien and Caoimhín Ó'Raghallaigh

Kitty Lie Over

These two (fiddle and pipes duo) are really fun to listen to.
The two instruments move virtually as one and there's not a bad moment on the CD.

Anniversaries

4 Years for the Irish Fiddle Website!
(well, it's long time on the web...besides, it's 4 years of good content without advertising!)

10 Years for Fiddle Magazine!
Lots of music magazines crash and burn after a year or two. For a small, niche magazine like this to last 10 year really means something!

New Publications
Dover Publishing, USA Compiles:
"Petrie's Complete Irish Music"
1582 Traditional Melodies

Formerly in three separate volumes. This a nice way to find tunes your great-grandfather might have known. Many tunes are listed with source and date. Like "From Mary Donohue, Aran-More, 19 Sept.,1857"
