Joe O'Dowd was born in the townland of Knocknaseagh, Gurteen, Sligo in 1913
The neighborhood Joe grew up in was exceptionally rich in fiddle playing particularly,
and his uncle, John O'Dowd, was a major influence on Michael Coleman. In his youth, Joe was
a regular visitor to the home of the O'Beirne's of Killaville, a family who played a pivotal role
in the development of the music of South Sligo. He emigrated to England in 1933 where he played
with Martin Wynne in the Garryowen Ceili, returning to Sligo in 1939 where he spent the rest of his life
Joe was a major figure in the South Sligo fiddle playing tradition and this recording was made in the
Teachers Center in Sligo in 1980. He died in 1987.
His wife Shiela donated this recording to the archive.
